About Psoriasis in Ayurveda
Psoriasis in Ayurveda is a well-known disease as “Kitibha” is an autoimmune ailment that causes plaques, which are itchy or sore patches of thick, red, dry skin.
Psoriasis can happen in any racial group but at variable rates. Psoriasis often occurs in the ages between 15 and 35, but it can develop at any age.
What happens in Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is the consequence of a sped-up skin production process. Generally, skin cells nurture deep in the skin and slowly rise to the surface. Finally, they fall off. The regular life cycle of a skin cell is one month. But in people with psoriasis, this production development may arise in just like 5 days since skin cells don’t have time to fall off. Scales regularly develop on joints, such as elbows and knees. They may grow anywhere on the body, including the:
Plaque Psoriasis is the most communal type of Psoriasis. It occurs to red and inflamed patches that cover over the area of the skin. These patches are covered with whitish-silver scales or plaques are found on elbows, knees, and scalp. Scalp psoriasis can be mild and almost unnoticeable. But it can also be severe, last a long time, and cause thick, crusted sores.
Intense itching can affect your sleep and everyday life, and scratching a lot can lead to skin infections and hair loss. Evidence suggests that obesity is a risk factor for incident psoriasis, aggravates existing psoriasis, and that weight reduction may improve the severity of psoriasis in overweight individuals.
How Coconut oil helps in psoriasis?
Coconut oil is one of the good homely medicine for psoriasis. Because it is an effective moisturizer, soothes the dryness of the skin. “According to Ayurveda, coconut oil has pitta (One of the body constituent) pacifying or cooling properties. Changes in heat and temperature create a disturbance in pitta dosha, which is associated with the fire element, and causing a sensitive skin syndrome (in which the skin is easily irritated and inflamed with diffused redness). The main component that sets it apart from other oils is the presence of lauric acid. Other than the mother’s milk, the highest concentration of lauric acid is found in virgin coconut oil. Lauric acid, the predominant medium-chain fatty acid found in coconut oil, has proven antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory benefits.” This oil can be used as a natural face and body moisturiser if you have a dry skin. It not only softens the skin but also has a cooling effect on it. Coconut oil is a medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), when this oil is used in ayurveda diet for psoriasis, it takes another route through the digestive system and competes with glucose to become the body’s preferred energy source, thus helps to reduce excessive weight.
Which Coconut Oil to Use in Psoriasis ?
The quality and nutrient content of coconut oil depends on the method which has been used to extract it. When dried coconut kernel or (kopra in hindi) is processed with chemical solvents and physical extraction methods are used to extract oil, we get refined coconut oil. In this method, some of the beneficial nutrients are lost.
On the other hand, cold-pressed oils are extracted by boiling, fermentation, refrigeration, mechanical press, and centrifugation. Since high temperatures and chemicals are not used, cold-pressed oil retains all its phytochemicals (chemicals derived from plants), along with the distinctive taste and smell. Thus, cold pressed coconut oil is the purest and rich oil. It usually has water white colour and contains vitamin E in natural form. It has a nutty fragrance which makes you have this oil on your body and head immediately.
